Filter and Sort Your Recent Foods

See the foods you usually eat at each meal first, and sort your Recents by most recent, most frequent, or alphabetical

Most people don't eat the same things at breakfast that they eat at dinner. Your Recents in Food Search can now reflect that. Filter them to a single meal and choose how they're sorted, so the oatmeal you have every morning is waiting at the top when you add to Breakfast, and the chicken and rice you have most nights is there when you add to Dinner.

Where to find it

Open Food Search and look at the header above your recent items on the All tab. It holds two controls:

  • Sort, on the left, shows the current order, such as Most Recent. Tap it to open the Sort by sheet.

  • Meal filter, on the right, shows which meal's foods you're seeing, such as All meals. Tap it to open the Show foods from sheet.

Tap an option in either sheet and it applies right away. To close a sheet without changing anything, tap the X or swipe it down.

Filtering by meal

When you pick a meal, your Recents show only the foods, meals, and recipes you've logged to a meal with that name, on any day. Filtering to Breakfast shows everything you've had for Breakfast, not just what you logged on the day you're looking at.

Which meals you can filter by

The Show foods from sheet lists All meals, followed by the meals on the day you're logging foods to. The meal you're adding to is marked Adding to this meal.

Because the list comes from that day, it can change from one day to the next. Open Food Search from the Dashboard and you're logging to today, so you'll see today's meals. Open it from another day in the Journal and you'll see that day's meals instead. A one-off meal you've added to a day only shows up on that day, and if you're a Plus member with a different Daily Meals schedule for each day of the week, the list follows that day's schedule.

Here's how that plays out. Say your weekdays have Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks, and on Saturdays you've swapped Lunch for Brunch. When you log to Wednesday, you can filter to Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, or Snacks. When you log to Saturday, Brunch takes Lunch's place, and Lunch isn't offered because Saturday doesn't have one. To find the salad you usually have for a weekday lunch while you're logging Saturday, switch to All meals.

Meal names have to match exactly. If you rename "Snack" to "Snacks," the foods you logged under "Snack" won't appear when you filter to "Snacks" until you log them there.

When you add foods somewhere that isn't tied to a date, such as a recipe or your Daily Meals schedule, the list uses the meals in your Daily Meals schedule for that day of the week (or for today, when you're adding to a recipe).

Sorting

Tap the sort control to choose an order:

  • Most Recent (the default): the items you logged most recently come first.

  • Most Frequent: the items you log most often come first. Ties go to the one you logged most recently.

  • Alphabetical: A to Z by name.

Sorting respects the meal filter. With a meal selected, Most Recent orders items by when you last logged them to that meal, and Most Frequent counts only the times you logged them to that meal. So a protein shake you have every morning and now and then as a snack ranks near the top under Breakfast but further down under Snacks. With All meals, Most Frequent counts every time you've logged an item, across all meals.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a food missing when I filter to a meal?

It's usually one of three things:

  • You haven't logged it to that meal since updating the app. MacrosFirst started remembering which meal you log each item to with the update that added meal filters. Anything you logged before then is still under All meals, and it joins a meal's list the next time you log it there.

  • You logged it under a meal with a different name. The filter matches meal names exactly.

  • You removed it from that meal. See the question on removing foods below.

Why can't I filter to a meal I have on other days?

The list of meals comes from the day you're logging to. If that day doesn't have the meal, it isn't offered. Switch to All meals to see everything.

Why doesn't Most Frequent match my long-term habits yet?

Most Frequent counts the times you've logged each item since the update that added meal filters, so it needs a few days of logging to catch up with how you really eat.

What happens if I remove a food while a meal is selected?

Swipe an item to the left to remove it from your Recents. With a meal selected, it's removed from that meal's list only, and it stays in your Recents for any other meal you've logged it to. With All meals selected, it's removed from your Recents completely.

What should I read next?

Want different meals on different days? The meals you can filter by come from your meal schedule, so setting it up to match how you actually eat makes these filters even more useful: Daily Meals.
